Belmont-Cragin Elementary School in Chicago, IL, participated in a three-year Safe Schools Pilot Project to learn about and practice social and emotional learning (SEL). The project provided training for staff to help them create a safe, nurturing, and socially and emotionally thriving school community. Training included a specific focus on the prevention of bullying through the integration of intentional social and emotional learning strategies. The school has also implemented the Caring School Community program. The Safe Schools Pilot Project is a partnership between CPS/Belmont-Cragin, Mental Health America of Illinois, the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, the Illinois Children’s Mental Health Partnership, and the Center for the Collaborative Classroom.
